Desolate Sky. Chicago's Desolate Sky play straight up thrash metal that is somewhat reminiscent of bands like Metal Church, Testament, and Overkill. It's not death metal, black metal, hardcore, goth, industrial, or nu-metal, it's just regular ole' heavy metal with a lots of tough riff grooves and vocals that sounded like a cross between Bobby Ellsworth and Dave Mustaine. Gee, they've even got guitar solos. I guess you might call them old school.

Desolate Sky opens up with "Line of Fire". It's funny because you start listening some percussive sounds really low mixed and you think "well, this is not good sound"....but that's a trick and soon the whole band enters with good sound and full force in this pure heavy metal style. My absolute favorite track here is "Vengeance is Mine" with a killer metal riff and a lot of rhythm that will surely keep you headbanging. The guitars here are heavy and well mixed with a strong sound that gives more power to the riffs that are the main element here and also adding solos at full speed with a lot of technical skills. The vocals sound similar to the ones in Judas Priest but with more middle ranges, full of power and memorable melodies. And the combination of the riffs and vocals make each of the four tunes recorded here extremly memorable and I promise you will sing the choruses along with the recording soon. Pure heavy metal with strong emphasis on good songs.

Desolate Sky - Self-Titled Demo (review by Pete) Proving that good metal can still come from the great city of Chicago, Desolate Sky's self-titled demo was a nice surprise amidst a sea of bullshit that comes across my desk. Even though it was a demo, the production wasn't bad at all and does a good job showing what the band brings to the table. They've got two strong guitar players who didn't forget their old school metal roots, and Steve Beaudette really tears the frets to shreds on some of the leads. Drums and bass were bludgeoning at all times and together with the second guitar player - kept metal spewing by the gallon.

The artwork was simple and the liner notes inside showed a band photo - everyone decked out in denim and leather. Fuck yeah! Check out this demo and get a taste of what Desolate Sky is about. It's old school all the way and you'll find your fist flying high wanting more.
